"For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them." Matthew 18:20
We started with a midweek Bible study and, on February 28th, had our first Sunday service with about 30 adults. We worshipped the Lord in a small daycare room amid murals of 101 Dalmatians and Lady and the Tramp. The worship team consisted of Pastor John on guitar, two vocalists, and a triangle.
The simplicity of those times demonstrated the essence of what Calvary Central Bucks is about -- no show, no advertising, no gimmicks -- just believers in Jesus Christ gathering to hear His word, worship in song, and care for one another through fellowship. Through this simplicity, God would be honored and would build His church.
In no time at all, we grew out of the nursery and graduated to "The Barn." True to its name, the barn was a drafty wood frame building with no heat, no cooling system, and plenty of animals (mice, bugs and the infamous "birds"). No one will forget the radiant "toaster ovens" which had to be raised to the ceiling by ropes and pulleys in winter. Many people showed up early just to get a spot directly under the heaters. And during the summer months, the whir of a half dozen fans - and singing birds - made it difficult to hear the message.
"They came because the Spirit of God was evident in the preaching, worship, and by the love we had for one other."
People did not come because of the beautiful surroundings but because the Spirit of God was evident in the preaching, worship, and by the love we had for one other. We always joked that every time we added more chairs, God would add more people. Though we joked, this became a reality and every week, more were added to our numbers. We quickly moved to two services and within two years, God moved us out of "The Barn" and into our present location in Chalfont.
Through a series of "Divinely-inspired" events, we were able to take a maternity store, and transform it into a church. On June 24, 2001 Calvary Central Bucks had our first Sunday Service in the Chalfont Square Village on Route 202, right next to a dog grooming store and a pizza place. Since then, God has continued to blow us away as so many come, accept Christ, and grow in godliness.
Our prayer is that He will continue to be pleased as we attempt to obey His commands in simplicity as the early church did - devoted to His word, prayer and love for each other.
Much has changed since our days at "The Barn." We have freshly painted walls, a heating and cooling system, "the most comfortable chairs in America," a great sound system, awesome worship team, tape library, and even a Café and Bookstore. There are ministries to meet almost every need and our numbers have increased to over 600 adults on a Sunday morning. Through all this change, one thing remains the same - this church belongs to Jesus Christ and Him alone. He began this work, and He will continue it as we yield to His will and not our own. Calvary Chapel of Central Bucks exists to bring glory and honor to the name of Jesus. Our prayer is that He will continue to be pleased as we attempt to obey His commands in simplicity as the early church did - Devoted to His word, prayer and love for each other.
